In my previous edition of Beyond the Flight Deck, I shared my journey through the stages of grief after unexpectedly finding myself unemployed. It’s been a process of reflection, acceptance, and determination to move forward. But as the days pass, I’m finding that navigating this new reality isn’t as simple as just putting one foot in front of the other. There’s a conflict within me—a push and pull between the drive to charge ahead into the next chapter of my career and the need to take time for self-care.

Typically, these requests are met with positive responses such as “Thanks for connecting,” “I love your mission,” or “Please let me know what I can do to help.” However, today, a male C-level executive in aviation responded with:

The aviation industry faces a pressing challenge: a significant gender gap. Despite women constituting half the global workforce, they represent only 7% of the aviation sector and a mere 3% of its C-level executives. This disparity highlights a critical need for inclusivity, particularly beyond the well-discussed realm of pilots. I recently learned of the “Female Triplet” Effect in an article about networking for women in the Harvard Business Review and it made me think about how it could truly make a difference in exponentially increasing the number of women in leadership in aviation and aerospace.
